Any accident involving a school bus is taken very seriously, especially because of the precious cargo on-board.
However, the facts show that school buses are the safest way for kids to get to school. The Wisconsin State Patrol oversees 1,500 inspections of school buses in the North Central Region of Wisconsin annually.
They check and double check everything from breaks and tires, to lug nuts and spark plugs. It’s their job as well as the bus companies to keep your children safe. But ,its also the design of a school bus that gives you even more safety.
Sgt. Robert Hartson with the Wisconsin State Patrol told us, “Buses are designed to not crush occupants in the event of a rollover. It keeps the occupants safe and basically in a passive system where the seats are taller and much more flexible.”
Each bus company also has their staff and drivers do routine inspections everyday before operation.
The State Patrol also reminds all drivers that when you see the red lights flashing, by law, you must stop. This allows time and space for children that are coming on and off the bus to get home safely.
