The U.S. Postal Service says the Rothschild Distribution center will close in 2015. Rothschild is one of 82 USPS facilities that could close next year as a way for the agency to save money. In 2012, the USPS said operations from the Wausau Processing and Distribution Facility [in Rothschild] would move to Green Bay.
USPS says 110 people work at the facility. A spokesperson says they don’t expect any job loss. Bargaining unit employees will be reassigned to other bargaining unit positions. Non-bargaining employees will be reassigned to available supervisory positions consistent with their reduction in force avoidance procedures. In 2012 and 2013, the Postal Service consolidated 141 mail processing facilities nationwide.
In addition, processing and distribution in Eau Claire and La Crosse will be moved to St. Paul, Minn. Also, Madison mail processing will be moved to Milwaukee.
According to a release from USPS, the move will increase efficiency and improve productivity.
The move comes as a floundering economy and the dominance of e-mail; as well as social media sites such as Facebook offering private messaging have added to the USPS' woes. According to a spokesperson with the Postal Service, the decline in mail volume has caused an excess of employees and equipment.
An exact date for the closing was not provided.
