***US 51 traffic switch, speed reduction planned next week in Wausau
Crews working on the reconstruction of the US 51/Marathon County U and K interchange in Wausau plan to begin shifting northbound and southbound US 51 traffic to a temporary adjacent roadway on Monday, April 7. The speed limit in the work zone will also be lowered to 55 MPH.
Motorists are advised to drive with caution as they approach the work zone and should be ready to encounter slow moving vehicles. The schedule is dependent on favorable weather conditions and construction status.

Location: Old Hwy 70 (Minocqua) to 3rd Avenue (Woodruff)
Schedule: March 31 to late August 2014
Cost: $4.6 million
Description: Crews will reconstruct the intersections of WIS 70 west and County J to include additional turn lanes and new traffic signals; install new street lighting; reconstruct the roadway with new asphalt pavement and curb and gutter, replace storm, sanitary and water lines.
Traffic impacts: Motorists can expect to encounter a minimum of one lane in each direction throughout most of construction. At times, traffic may be reduced to a single lane with flagging operations. Motorists should plan for delays.
***Business 51 (Grand Avenue) improvements scheduled to begin in Wausau
A construction information meeting is scheduled for April 14
Resurfacing work on Business 51 (Grand Avenue) between Kent Street and Division Street, in Wausau, is scheduled to begin as early as Monday, April 28.
The public is invited to attend a construction information meeting to learn more about the project’s schedule and traffic impacts. The meeting is scheduled for Monday, April 14, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers of Wausau City Hall, 407 Grant Street, Wausau. Citizens who are hearing-impaired and require an interpreter may request one by contacting Kristin McHugh at 715.421.8380 at least three working days prior to the meeting.
American Asphalt of Wisconsin is the prime contractor for the $2.9 million project. Crews will mill the existing pavement and replace it with new asphalt. Additional improvements include:
Replacing the existing lighting system to meet current standards
Providing bicycle accommodations
Removing the existing corrugated median
Business 51 (Grand Avenue) will remain open to one lane of traffic in each direction during construction. Motorists can expect to encounter delays, especially during peak travel hours. The project is scheduled for completion by early October 2014.

Eighty percent of the project will be paid for with federal transportation funds, the remaining 20 percent will be paid for with a combination of state and local funding.
