Since 1984 bars in Rhinelander have been providing free taxi vouchers to patrons who want to avoid drinking and driving. Now, they are launching a new program to make the process even easier for those wishing to take advantage of the Safe Ride program.
Beginning next month, local taverns hope to begin the "Pub Pilot" program in which a volunteer will bring your car home for you while you ride in the taxi. That way, bar patrons will not have to come back to the bar the next morning to retrieve their vehicles.
Aaron Schultz, owner of Big Daddy's Bar in Rhinelander is heading up the new program. He says that it will stop bar patrons from using the excuse of not wanting the leave their cars in order to avoid taking a cab.
"People are reluctant to leave their vehicle overnight unattended." Schultz says.
The proposed program will rely entirely on volunteers. If you would like to help out and serve as a Pub Pilot, you can call 715-362-3444. The only requirement is that you have a valid drivers license.
