MILWAUKEE (AP) -- It was another wild year in Wisconsin.

Gov. Scott Walker survived a recall attempt, and U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan had a shot at becoming vice president. There were five statewide elections in seven months, making it nearly impossible to escape robocalls and campaign ads. And a white supremacist killed six people at a Sikh temple.

Also in 2012: A judge struck down a contentious collective-bargaining law and a voter ID law was put on hold. Wisconsin elected its first female senator in Tammy Baldwin, giving Gov. Tommy Thompson his first loss in a statewide race.

The weather was also an issue. Heat and drought took their toll on harvests of tart cherries and maple syrup.

And three Wisconsin soldiers were killed in Afghanistan this year, bringing the state's total to 31.
