For the last several years we've heard how the housing market is hurting homeowners upside down with mortgages and homes decreasing in value. But area realtors say that may be turning around. They say they're seeing multiple offers on properties -- a sign that buyers are now interested again.
Just driving around Wausau, there are numerous "for sale" signs in front of all types of houses. Experts say the market is up 30 percent statewide over the last year and those signs prove it.
Whether you prefer an older home with lots of character or a spacious ranch style home, realtors say you can find several good deals in the area.
Right now, $130,000 is the median home price in Marathon County according to Coldwell Banker Broker Associate Lana Mohs. But if you're in the market for a starter home, you can find those too.
They say there are plenty of options under $100,000.
"If you want to buy, now is a good time to buy and get out of your rental," says Glenn Mohs, a Broker Associate with Coldwell Banker. "Some people are going to rent forever but if you're looking to buy, now is the time."
They say houses are selling with less time on the market than they have in the past six years. Foreclosures and short sales are also contributing to sales. Realtors say with low interest rates, many people are able to buy a home for the same amount of money as they would pay in rent.
