Reading School Announcements Boosts Autistic Student's Confidence

Medford Middle School 8th grader Jack Mayrer beams with confidence as he tells his fellow students what will be served on tomorrow's lunch menu.

"We will have dipper sticks with cinnamon-honey yogurt." Mayrer says enthusiastically.

Doing the morning announcements is an exercise in confidence for any middle school student, but the fact that Jack has autism makes this feat even more amazing.
Its something his mom Cathy never thought she would some day see happen.

"He started out as a three and a half year old that didn't speak. So, to go from not being able to talk at all to reading the announcements on camera is huge this year." says Cathy Mayrer.

Jack has received help in reading the announcements from members of the Medford Middle School Student Council. Each day this week they are helping a different autistic student to read in front of the school. Its something the student volunteers say is very rewarding.

"It helps younger kids and even older kids to show that they really do enjoy us helping them and it is a really great way for them to try new things." says 8th Grader Lilly Brost.

With so much community support, it is clear students like Jack will continue to have opportunities to boost their confidence well into the future.
