WATCH: Elderly Dog Rescued from Burning Home near Wausau

A home northwest of Wausau was badly damaged after a fire Thursday morning. No humans were hurt, but three cats may have died. The home is located at 10425 N. 60th Avenue in the Town of Maine.

Some quick work by firefighters saved a family dog. The family who lives in the home is obviously still shaken up, but say they're grateful to know that their three dogs are safe.

When Michelle Boehm's husband called her at work Thursday notifying her of the fire, she immediately worried about the welfare of their three dogs.

"Of course I asked him if the dogs were out. He said yes. when I got here only two were out,” she said.

Michelle soon learned her 13-year-old dog, “Ted Bear” was still inside the burning home. She says the dog is deaf and couldn't hear the desperate calls for him to leave the house. SAFER Deputy Chief Steve Meilahn saw the dog on the floor of the burning home, and was able to carry him outside. The family brought Ted Bear into their garage, where firefighters gave him albuterol as treatment.

"They went in and grabbed him and pulled him out. We thought he was gone, and he is fine. He is doing very very well right now. They rushed him to the emergency vet...."

And while the house may be seriously damaged, the Boehm family is grateful for their safety, and grateful for the firefighters quick response.

The fire's cause is still under investigation. Firefighters tell NewsChannel 7 they believe it started in the basement.
