Residents of a local neighborhood in Wausau are taking their safety into their own hands. On Friday, volunteers from the Longfellow neighborhood in Wausau are teaming up with the alcohol and other drugs partnership of Marathon County to raise awareness about heroin, alcohol, and tobacco abuse.
Four teams of two set out to canvas the neighborhood and hand out red informational packages that encourage residents to communicate with each other and keep watch for suspicious activity and substance abuse.
neighborhood leaders say they have no choice but to help.
"The heroin use in wausau has take a huge jump and we have to fight it now. We can;t ignore this it's not going to get better. It's not going to go away and we have to make people as aware as possible," says Anne Heidemann, Neighborhood Group President.
Friday's activities are part of the county's campaign called "Pushback Against Drug Abuse".
Longfellow is the third neighborhood in Marathon County to tackle this door-to-door campaign.
