A motion to lower Jeffrey Trevino $1 million bond has been denied, after a Ramsey County prosecutor said he is a flight risk. Trevino, 39, has been charged with two counts of second-degree murder in the death of his wife, Kira Trevino Steger. She has not been seen since February 21, and police presume she is dead.
According to a Minnesota newspaper, in phone calls monitored by police, Trevino called his family from jail and asked them to get a briefcase from under his bed that contained his passport. The prosecutor also said Trevino urged his family not to use their houses to secure his bail, which could result in them losing their houses if he fled.
Trevino's attorney argued his client is innocent and he deserves to have his bail lowered to an amount that he can raise. He suggested allowing Trevino to wear a GPS monitoring bracelet if he was released.
Jeffrey Trevino will return to court March 29.
