Not only is Portage County home to Farm Technology Days this year, but it's also where the potato harvest has a special significance.
Potatoes come in many forms. From french fries to hash browns,
you can even mash them or bake them, but have you ever thought about where they come from?
Wisconsin is the number three producer of potatoes in the nation and Portage County is the number one producer of potatoes in the state. Once they are produced right here in our own backyard, they reach dinner tables all over the world.
Just one acre of potatoes can produce about 480 weight of potatoes. A 100 weight of potatoes is ten, ten pound bags, and that is just on one acre.
Potato farmer Dale O'brien says that farming technology is constantly improving and making the harvest more efficient and more successful each year. All of the latest technology will be on display at the three day event and field demonstrations will help put portage county's potato harvest in perspective.
