NewsChannel 7 has obtained new court documents detailing witness observations from the night a Marshfield woman was killed.
According to the probable cause statement from the Marshfield Police Department, the mother of the murder suspect is the one who found the body of Maisie McCullough, 18, in a bathtub in the home she once shared with her ex-boyfriend Gabriel Campos, 20, his mother, and the couple's young son.
A forensic pathologist who preformed the autopsy on McCullough determined the cause of death to be multiple sharp force injuries, including a cut to her throat that severed her airway, right jugular vein and carotid artery.
Campos' mother told police Maisie had lived with them for nearly three years, but had moved out in July ending her relationship with her son [Campos]. Police also interviewed Campos' step-father who said he had spoke with Campos earlier that day and he described himself as feeling helpless and his life had never been worse.
Lt. Rick Gramza with the Marshfield Police Department said in an interview Tuesday, "We're seeing some warning signs that there could have been some domestic violence between the two of them that went unreported, and unfortunately culminated into this type of crime."
Investigators say a single set of shoe prints left at the scene matches shoes Gabriel Campos was wearing when he turned himself into police nearly six hours later. Lt. Kevin Schwartz with the Wisconsin Rapids Police Department says police arrested Campos without incident at Motel 6 in Wisconsin Rapids with his son, who was unharmed. Police say Campos didn't have any weapons, drugs or alcohol on him. The boy is currently with family.
While in custody, Campos asked to place a call to his mother. According to the probable cause statement, he told her he was sorry. Saying, "I'm sorry, I didn't mean for anything to happen like this. I'm really sorry. I'm really sorry that it had to happen like that mother. I didn't want it to."
Marshfield Police say they believe they've found the weapon used in the murder, a knife. It was found during a search of Campos' car in Wisconsin Rapids.
Campos remains behind bars on a $5 million cash bond. Charges have not been formally filed, but Wood County Judge Nicholas J. Brazeau said there is probable cause for Campos to remain in jail. He's scheduled to return to court October 1.
Marshfield Police, the Wisconsin Crime Laboratory and the Wisconsin State Patrol are investigating.
