Plea Deal Reached in Prostitution Sting

A 33-year-old Merrill man arrested January 17 during a prostition sex sting has reached a plea deal with prosecutors and could have the charged amended to disorderly conduct if he stays out of trouble.

Joshua Shields, a former University of Wisconsin- Stevens Point faculty member, was one of four people arrested during the sting.

A review hearing has been scheduled for March 13, 2015.

The other suspects in the case have reached similar deals.

Police the investigation focused on individuals who respond to advertisements for escort services placed on websites such as “Backpage.com.”

The Wausau Police Department said in a press release they have seen an increase in prostitution, both locally and statewide.
