A 21-year-old Wausau man accused of attacking two corrections officers, seriously injuring one; while he was incarcerated at the Marathon County Jail has reached a plea deal with prosecutors and will avoid a jury trial.
Frederick Morris was expected to head to trial early next month.
Friday in Marathon County Circuit Court a judge dismissed charges in four misdemeanor drug cases in exchange for no contest pleas in the battery case. However, the drug charges will still be considered during Morris' September 19 sentencing hearing.
In March 2013, Corrections Officer Denney Woodward was treated and released for his injuries. Corrections Officer Julie Christensen spent several weeks in a coma, but returned to work in February 2014.
Investigators say Christensen was in cellblock C with Woodward, attempting to retrieve food trays when Morris refused to hand his tray over. That's when investigators say Morris became combative and struck Christensen in the head and she collapsed. According to the Sheriff's Department, Morris also struck Woodward in the face multiple times.
Morris remains in custody in the Lincoln Co. Jail on a $250,000 cash bond.
Morris had been in the Marathon Co. Jail since February 1, 2013 on drug charges.
