Two photos were posted on Instagram by a Wisconsin National Guard member at funeral training on February 17th. The captions that go with them are sparking some controversy.
One shows a group of soldiers, including the one from the Wisconsin Army National Guard, posing around an empty flag-draped training basket in Arkansas where they were training.
The caption reads, "We put the fun in funeral". The other is of one soldier and the caption reads, "It's so damn cold out, why have a funeral outside. Somebody is getting a jacked up flag."
Locals we spoke with have mixed reactions to the posts and captions.
"My cousin is in the air force, he probably deals with this, he wouldn't, I don't know," Josh Reynolds said.
Allan Smith said, " I was on campus as a retired guy for years, and the students have a different take on things."
Major General Donald P. Dunbar, the Wisconsin Adjutant General, issued a statement about the photos.
He said, "We expect all of our soldiers and airmen to live by a core set of values, in word and deed -- I was appalled by the offensive photos and comments that appeared on this soldier's social media site regarding her duties as a funeral honor guard member."
Dunbar has ordered an investigation into the matter. The soldier who posted the pictures has been indefinitely suspended from the funeral honors detail.
