UPDATE: Stevens Point Woman Sentenced for Leading Deputy on High Speed Chase

A 21-year-old Stevens Point woman convicted of leading a deputy on high-speed chase last February will spend three months in jail.

According to a news release from the Portage County Sheriff’s Office, Kayla Skotzke was pulled over on the shoulder of State Highway 66 near Airport Road, north of Stevens Point on February 25. A deputy pulled up behind the vehicle to offer assistance or investigate. Once he turned on his warning lights the suspect vehicle pulled away at a high rate of speed, crossing over the centerline into the lane of oncoming traffic.

The deputy pursued the vehicle for approximately 12 miles at speeds of over 110 miles per hour. It crossed the centerline several times, at one point entering the ditch along Highway 66 before returning to the roadway and continuing to flee. The suspect failed to negotiate a curve on Highway 66 and skidded off the road, striking a small tree.

Skotzke was uninjured and was taken into custody without incident. A preliminary breath test showed she was operating with a BAC of .244.

She was convicted of 1st offense OWI.
