About 300 people flooded into the Riverfront Arts Center in Stevens Point on Saturday to get into the Easter spirit and see how their Easter Peeps can become art.
Dozens of local people submitted pictures, dioramas, and anything else their creative minds could think of. Volunteers at the center said the Peeps Party exhibit is always popular, but it's especially busy just before the holiday.
"Every year is something different, so it's a lot of fun," said volunteer and Peep artist, Toni Starr. "I don't think we'll ever be able to get rid of it. And it draws people in and that's the whole point is to expose people to this wonderful gallery that's down here and it's a community gallery so a community show is perfect."
She creates Peep art for the exhibit each year. This year she was inspired by a program she's involved in called Head Start and wanted the kids she worked with to understand the reference, so she made "If You Give A Peep A Pancake" based off the book, If You Give A Pig A Pancake, by Laura Numeroff. She also made Mary Peepins, inspired by Mary Poppins.
Andrea Strooisma has made this exhibit part of her Easter tradition. She said she loves seeing the creative ways her childhood Easter candy favorite can be turned into art.
"We've had Peeps around for forever," she said. "I remember waiting for my Easter basket to get the Peeps and eat them and so it's fun to see art made out of them."
The exhibit opened on April 12 and will stay up until April 26. The Center is closed on Easter Sunday.
