A passerby is being called a hero after pulling a man from a burning vehicle Sunday.

According to the Wood County Sheriff's Department, Malcom Leach, 57, was eastbound on Highway 73 in the Township of Sigel, when his vehicle entered the ditch and rolled. The vehicle then started on fire, burning the car and approximately 50 large hay bales which were in a nearby farm field.

Wood County Deputies say a passerby pulled Leach out of the burning car because he was unconscious at the time.

Highway 73 was closed from the time of the accident around 1:45 p.m. to about 5:30 p.m.

Leach was airlifted to an area hospital. The man's condition is unknown.

According to the Wisconsin Rapids Tribune, a rescuer was treated for smoke inhalation.
