Brian Johnson, 21, of Rhinelander is charged with Battery to a Law Enforcement Officer and three other charges, after police say he attacked a Merrill Police Officer during Friday's Fall Ride activities in Tomahawk.

Officer Mark Heckendorf of the Merrill Police Department is recovering from injuries after the attack.

Authorities say officers responded to the report of a fight around 11:28 p.m. near the bandstand. Officers were questioning 46-year-old Martin Strandberg of Gleason about an altercation. The Strandberg became disorderly and as officers attempted to place him in handcuffs, Johnson attacked Officer Heckendorf.

Authorities say Johnson punched the officer 3-4 times.

Officer Heckendorf suffered a concussion. He was also treated for a broken nose and chipped teeth. He has since been released from the hospital.
