Obama to Speak at Fast-Growing Wis. Engines Plant

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- The Milwaukee-area engines plant that President Barack Obama will visit Thursday has been growing rapidly, in part because of an oil boom in North Dakota.

General Electric's plant in the suburb of Waukesha makes gas engines used in the oil and natural gas industries.

Spokesman Shaun Wiggins says it hired 64 new employees last year -- 36 of them hourly workers. Manufacturing jobs at the plant have grown 45 percent since 2010.

Obama is expected to talk about ways to improve job opportunities during his visit to the plant. The trip follows a State of the Union address in which the president promised a review of federal job-training programs and vowed to work with top U.S. companies to help the long-term unemployed.
