For much of the year, Minocqua is a lot like many other small communities across Wisconsin, but in the summer it transforms into one of the state’s biggest tourist destinations. While the town normally has a population of around 4,500 people, it can double or even triple in the warm weather months. That has many businesses working hard to keep up with the influx of people.
The Concord Inn Best Western in Minocqua expects their hotel to be completely full for the Memorial Day weekend. That has them making sure they have all of the staffing they will need in order to keep the hotel running smoothly.
“We get more people on duty at one time. Our girls like our housekeepers that we hire are year-round and we just increase it when the summer season starts.” Says hotel manager Barb Howard.
Just down the road from Best Western is Albee’s Yacht Club, a lakeside bar popular with tourists. Owner Randy Albrecht says he is anticipating a very busy weekend ahead and says it has a big impact on their staffing.
“We basically almost double our staff for the three or three and a half months of summer.” Albrecht says.
While keeping up can be challenging, business owners say they are looking forward to a strong start to the summer season.
