Out of frustration your instinct may be to just throw them in the trash, but a greener approach is to take them to a business that offers a recycling program. Dozens of places now offer this service for free including; Lowe's, Home Depot and Menard's. Most of the time a box is near the store entrance or the lights are collected at the store's service desk.
And if you're in the market for new, consider buying LED. According to Home Depot's website, LED Christmas lights lower your energy bill, by being 80 percent more energy efficient than incandescent lights. They also last about 20 years, which is seven times longer than incandescent holiday light strings. They also won't heat up making them a safer option for Christmas decorating.
