The Kronenwetter Police Department will get a new addition this fall.
A new K-9 officer will begin intensive training in September. The German Shepherd is from Germany and will replace the former K-9 Chip, who died from complications with blastomycosis -- a rare fungal infection -- this past spring.
The department surpassed its fundraising goal of $13,000 to cover the costs of the dog.
"We still think of Chip as part of the department," says Police Chief Dan Joling. "Just standing here thinking about him is kind of hard, but yes, we're excited."
After considering a number of training facilities, the department selected the Steinig Tal Kennel Police K9 Academy in Campbellsport. The dog will be trained in narcotics detection and tracking.
