Today, dozens gathered outside the Merrill Fire Station to unveil the new firefighter memorial. The new memorial gives families, friends and the community a place to honor those who have served the community.
The ceremony included speeches from local officials, state associations and the fire chief.
One man in particular was honored for giving the ultimate sacrifice. Thomas Beckman died January 1987 while battling a routine house fire in Merrill. His family was also at the ceremony.
"It's very emotional," said Susan Ryman, daughter of Beckman, "I think to have someone being honored that lost their life to serve someone else is especially profound."
A bronze helmet and plaque of honor were both unveiled at the ceremony. Meanwhile, bagpipes and trumpets played softly in the background.
Private funds and donations were used to build the memorial. The department has had 181 firefighters serve since 1888.
