Neighbors Say They Reported Abuse of Malnourished Madison Girl

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Neighbors of a 15-year-old girl found recently to be severely malnourished says they alerted social services about potential abuse but don't know if anything was ever done.

Mark Stuntebeck says he's lived next door to the family since they both moved in to houses built by Habitat for Humanity about six years ago. He says he'd see her taking out the trash, scavenging through it and then hiding to eat what she found.

He says he saw it several times and even called social services, but he doesn't know what happened.

Melissa Clark lives across the street. She says her mother called child protective services about a year ago because they heard the stepmother berating her.

A message left at the state Department of Health Services wasn't immediately returned Wednesday.

This is so disturbing. That poor girl. I saw a video clip today and just about vomited. That fat pig of a step mother and her father better sit in prison forever. This poor girl didn't deserve the life they gave her. My prayers go out to her.

This situation is one of the most hainous things I have ever seen and then to watch the news clip last night (and truly I usually do not judge this way),but the mother is rolled in the courtroom in a wheelchair because she is MORBIDLY OBESE with a pendiculated abdomen hanging to her knees obviously NEVER missing a meal yet starving a growing teenager!! Maybe the real crime here is that social sevices did nothing when reported or were they too busy investigating bogus "get back" complaints that people with no lives continue to report for entertainment purposes??? Too sad anyway you look at it.

Once again the system has failed. Soc Services should have made a surprise visit to the house and followed up on the first neighbor's concerns...did they? It is so often the case that one child is singled out for abuse or the majority of it, as this poor girl was, and the rest may be relatively fine. I can't even fathom how anyone could be so cruel to their kid.

The neighbors did the right thing. But why does the law only allow so much we can do?
