NC7 Golf Classic Set for July 26-29 at Bull's Eye C.C.

Many of you have been wondering, now we can fill you in.

The 52nd edition of the NewsChannel 7 Golf Classic will be held July 26th-July 29th at Bull's Eye Country Club in Wisconsin Rapids.

But there's a new twist for qualifying for this year.

Rather than having individuals come out of the 43 different courses like they did last year, and in years past, there will be just 5 courses to qualify. 5 mini-tournaments across the region, at a course near you to play your way in.

Qualifying for the 2012 classic will be held at these 5 courses over 5 consecutive weekends in June and July:

Saturday, June 2-- The Ridges, Wisconsin Rapids
Sunday, June 10-- Pine Valley, Marathon
Sunday, June 17-- Eagle River, Eagle River
Sunday, June 24-- Foxfire, Waupaca
Sunday, July 1-- Timber Ridge, Minocqua

Unlike in years past, if you don't make the cut at one course, you can qualify out of another. Just contact one of these local courses for more info.

This new way of qualifying will hope to be even more organized and add a little pizazz as tourney director Buck Welsh told me.

So there are no exempt players?

Do contestants who qualified for last year's championship flight still get an exemption?

What made this Tournament unique, fun and so well known was the involvement of the local courses. The competition and opportunity to represent your home course was great. Every June local courses would be holding their own qualifies, it seemed every golfer in this whole region either participated or supported their local represenatives. Now it's just another golf tournament. WSAU had a great thing going, please don't wreck it.

What about the seniors, do we have to also qualify?

    Are previous champions still exempt?

I agree that if it isn't broke don't fix it. Qualifying at your local course had many advantages. The first of which is cost and convenience. The second is the competition/bragging rights within your own club. The third is that is brought diversity to the field. People play in the Channel 7 for a variety of reasons and many have different goals. For some it is to win, others to make the cut, improve your flight from last year, etc. There is another tournament that lets in the "little guys"...it's called March Madness. The new structure is a good way to get the best field, but I don't think it's a good way to run this particular event. The WSGA has the resources, contacts, and clout to run their events in this manner. It costs more to play in the Channel 7 than it does the State Am and you are guaranteed fewer days on an inferior course (and that isn't a knock on the local courses). You also get apparel, equipment, and state recognition. This doesn't take into consideration the CVGA and NEWGA events, where top players can compete on a local level, for less money, and earn cash for their performance rather than gift certificates. As a supporter of the Channel 7, I hope you can restore the old tournament guidelines and honor what Mr. Zelich started by running a more organized event. Too many questions unanswered right now to generate interest from the golfing community as a whole.

What happened to qualifing at your home course so you can represent your home course. How many qualifying spots for each site? Is there going to be a web site for information and an application to these qualifying spots? Are you going to need to pay the balance of the entry fee upon qualifing? Personally I do not agree with these changes. Now for the members of a course that they used to qualify at they are going to have to travel and pay extra for this. Once again to me it was about representing your course in this tournament. There are all kinds of tournaments around the state that I can travel to and play for stroke play tournaments It was a 50 year old tradition that just went to crap now it is no different than the state amateur open. Not sure if I am going to play in it now. I have not missed one in the past 12 years since I was introduced to the channel 7 Invitional
