With another summer scorcher in the 90s, many of us are looking for relief. Unfortunately public pools are already closed for the season.
Technically summer isn't over until the autumn equinox on Sept. 22, and it certainly still feels like summer.
But the municipal pools in Wausau have been closed since Aug. 19.
The popular Weston Aquatic Center is also locked up.
The water has been replaced with workers already preparing for our longest season, by getting the facility winter ready despite the public's plea to re-open.
"With the hot weather we got several calls people wanting to know if the pool's open or people wanting the pool to be open," said Paul Seefeldt, who works in the village's parks department.
He says even if they wanted to re-open the pool, they couldn't. The pool has been drained, and filling it would take days. Plus, they'd have to order chemicals to keep the water safe. In addition, many of the summer workers are college students who've already gone back to school.
Mandy Beil, a Wausau day care provider, wanted to give her kids their last summer hurrah at the aquatic center.
"Yeah, we were surprised when we got there, so a little bit disappointed but what can you do," Beil said.
Finding the aquatic center closed, she turned to plan B. Beil and other families are finding relief at Wausau's man-made lake.
Jennifer Doering, a Wausau mother, says she and her kids spent lots of time at various pools this summer and are grateful they can still enjoy the hot weather outdoors.
"If its warm all the way up to when school starts that's fabulous because we have such a long winter," Jennifer Doering said.
