Service for Milwaukee County Deputy Killed on Duty

Law enforcement officers from around the state are paying their respects to a Milwaukee County sheriff's deputy killed while on duty last week.

The officers are joining family and friends at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Milwaukee where a funeral service is being held for Sergio Aleman (AL'-eh-mahn). The 49-year-old deputy died July 31st after his sheriff's truck hit the back of a flatbed tow truck on Interstate 43 near downtown Milwaukee.

A procession of law enforcement officers will accompany Aleman's body from the church to St. Adalbert Cemetery.

A statement from the Aleman family says he was a loving husband, dedicated father and friend to many. Aleman had been with the sheriff's department for 18 years. He and his wife have five children.

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- The Milwaukee County sheriff says a sheriff's deputy died after his vehicle slammed into the rear of a flatbed tow truck.

Sheriff David A. Clarke Jr. held a news conference Wednesday about the crash that killed Deputy Sheriff Sergio Aleman.

Clarke says the tow truck had slowed for a traffic jam, and the 21-year-old driver was "in no way responsible" for Aleman's death.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports Clarke did not blame Aleman for the crash, either. The sheriff says he is waiting for results of a State Patrol investigation and an autopsy.

Aleman was an 18-year veteran of the sheriff's office. He was traveling near downtown Milwaukee when the crash happened Tuesday afternoon.

The deputy was in a sheriff's pickup that helps disabled vehicles.
