Mid-State Technical College is celebrating its 100 years of providing education, and what better way to celebrate that milestone than by opening a brand new campus.

M.S.T.C. had its grand opening on Wednesday. Hundreds of people packed the new campus to tour what once was a JC Penney store. Now, it is filled with the latest high-tech materials like new science and computer labs, classrooms, and innovative learning commons.

The Campus Dean, Steve Smith, said the previous campus was too small to accommodate a growing number of students and did not allow them to upgrade their learning tools.

"We worked very, very hard to improve our labs, our classroom spaces and most of all, our student life," he said. "We want our students to have a place that they can stay on campus, study, collaborate and they can be more successful if we can cause that to happen."

He said there is a growing need for technical colleges, which is why so many more people want to enroll.

"It's really a time I think when the technical colleges are meeting the need of the state of Wisconsin and the population," he said. "We need to be able to turn people around and get them out into the workforce fast and we can do that."

The new 52,000 square foot building is 44% larger than their previous campus, which may attract even more students. They expect almost 3,000 students to use the new building within its first year.

Summer session students have already had a chance to break in the new building, as they started class on Monday. The Fall semester will begin on August 18th.
