Merrill Wrestling Falls in Semifinals

Merrill's aspirations for a wrestling team state championship were dashed by Bay Port 28-21.

Merrill owned a 6-3 lead after the first three matches, then lost the next six straight and found themselves in a 25-6 hole.

State runner-up Mason Reinhardt began the comeback by getting the pin at 160 pounds, making it 25-12.

With three matches to go, the Blue Jays trailed 25-15. At 182, Ben Hintze got the pin to make it 25-21.

But in the following match, Alex Klug lost his match by decision to Alec Ingold 7-4, giving the 2nd-ranked Pirates an insurmountable 28-21 lead.

220 pound state champ Tyler Schmidt close the dual with a 14-2 major decision for the final margin, 28-25.

The 3rd-ranked Blue Jays beat Mukwonago 49-24 in the quarterfinals earlier on Friday to advance to the semifinals.
