The Merrill Fire Department is just days away from unveiling the city's first firefighter memorial on Sunday. Thursday, crews were busy putting on the final touches.
The new memorial will be the first of its kind in Merrill, honoring all 181 firefighter who have served at the department since it's founding in 1888. The memorial itself is dedicated to the memory of Lieutenant Thomas Beckman who died in the line of duty in January 1978. Merrill Fire chief Dave Savone says he hoped the memorial will serve as a reminder of all firefighters sacrifice.
"We want them to refelct and reflect on the service the firefighters have given them, the citizens," Savone said. "We also want them to be able to celebrate the lives of the firefighters and what they've done for the community."
The memorial is built right outside the new Merrill Fire Station at 110 Pier Street. The dedication is open to the public. The ceremony is Sunday, June 1st at 2:00 PM.
