Mutual aid served the Merrill Fire Department well Saturday when they were called to three different structure fires in a three hour period.
During the course of these incidents, the Merrill Fire Department received mutual aid from Corning Fire department, Pine River Fire Department, Wausau Fire Department, Tomahawk Fire department, Tomahawk EMS, Wisconsin DNR and Russell Fire Department. The Merill Police Department and the Lincoln County Sheriff's Department also assisted in the response.
The first fire broke out just after noon on Saturday. Lincoln County dispatch received a report of a truck fire inside of a storage unit just off of County Road C in the Town of Merrill. Before the fire department arrived on scene, two bystanders hooked a chain to the truck and a Deputy Sheriff used hist SUV to pull the flaming truck out of the storage unit. The deputy and the bystanders then tried to put the fire out using three fire extinguishers. A Wisconsin DNR brush truck, that was in the area, was finally able to extinguish the fire with about 50 gallons of water before the Merrill Fire Department arrived. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The damage is valued at $5,000.
The second fire was called in exactly an hour later, just after 1:00 PM. A neighbor on Jackson Street in the City of Merrill called the fire department to report a large amount of smoke coming from a building next door. That building was later identified at Yorde Tool & Machining. When crews arrived on scene, a defensive fire attack from the outside of the structure was deployed. Fire crews were able to stop the fire progress at the fire wall that separates the building in two areas. Schultz's wrecking was called to the scene with a crane to expose pockets of fire under the collapsed roof. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The loss is valued at $400,000 for the structure and its contents.
While fire companies were extinguishing the Jackson Street fire, another structure fire was reported by Lincoln County Dispatch. This fire was at a home on North Genesee Street in the City of Merrill. Upon arrival crews noted light smoke coming from the attic. Further investigation found a fire in a lower level bedroom. Crews were able to contain the fire the bedroom. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The loss is valued at $23,000 for the structure and contents.
No injuries were reported at any of the fires.
