Monday morning the city of Merrill broke ground on a new Fire Station to be located at 110 South Pier Street.
Previously, Merrill had two fire stations on both sides of the city. Fire Station 2 on the city's west side has since been sold. Leaving just Station 1 which had been built in 1915.
Although it had been renovated twice, during an interview with NewsChannel 7 last fall , Fire Chief Steve Hintze says the wiring is bad and so is the plumbing.
The city agreed on a new central location which will cut down on response times and will have enough space for all department's equipment.
The project is expected to cost $3.2 million.
The new fire station will house fire trucks, ambulances, and hazmat unit; with adjacent operations support areas, administrative offices, training space and living quarters.
Construction of the new fire station is anticipated to begin in early May and is scheduled for substantial completion in January 2014.
