Marquette Announces Layoffs to Trim Costs

Marquette University is eliminating 25 staff positions in a cost-cutting move.

Marquette's interim president, the Rev. Robert Wild, announced the cutbacks in a letter Wednesday to faculty and staff.

Wild says the cuts are part of an effort to create efficiencies so that a Marquette education will continue to be affordable.

The cuts are Marquette's first workforce reduction since the mid-1990s. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports no faculty members are affected.

According to Wild's letter, the reductions, combined with future employee turnover, retirements and not filling some vacancies, are expected to reduce Marquette's current employee base of 2,800 by about 105 positions.

The university declined to reveal which department or departments are affected.
