Wisconsin low-income residents who are worried about affording their winter energy bills can apply to a federally funded program that helps cover utility costs.

The program is administered through the Wisconsin Home Energy Assistance Program. It helps cover items such as heating and electricity bills and emergency furnace repair.

People who meet income requirements can get a portion of their home energy bills paid.

To qualify, someone in a single-person household would have to earn less than $24,288 per year. For a family of four, total annual income would have to be under about $46,692.

Wisconsin Public Service encourages elderly, disabled and low-income customers to apply. The program runs through May 15.

People seeking more information can call 1-866-HEAT-WIS (866-432-8947) or log on at www.homeenergyplus.wi.gov .
