Lose Weight by Revamping Your Refrigerator

The time of year has come once again where we face New Year's Resolutions and many of us vow to make smarter eating and exercise choices, lose weight, and make this year our healthiest one yet. You can jumpstart their resolution of weight loss by tackling one of the most critical areas of the home…the refrigerator!

This year, Weight Watchers celebrates its 50th anniversary and introduces the new Weight Watchers 360⁰ program. One of the key components of the new program is about gaining control over your environment by cleaning up and re-vamping the spaces where you live and work. The refrigerator is a space that can truly make or break your weight loss goals.

We met with Weight Watchers' Lisa Blink who shows us how to revamp your refrigerator.

1) Move foods that make you feel out of control out of sight: We placed the pie, dip, and takeout containers behind other items.
TIP: If possible, store these foods in opaque containers- or in the freezer!

2) Cut up fruits and vegetables and store in single-serve, easy-to-grab portions.
TIP: Use transparent containers so these healthy items catch your eye.

3) Satisfy a sweet tooth with single servings of treats: We swapped a large bowl of pudding for individual cups.
TIP: If you prefer to make your own pudding, spoon it into separate dishes rather than one bowl.

4) Lighten up dairy with low-fat or fat-free versions:
TIP: Just one example is the versatility of Plain Fat-Free Yogurt: it can be used to tenderize meat, add thickness to sauces (instead of heavy cream), replace some mayonnaise and sour cream in dips, and serve as a base for salad dressings and marinades. Try flavoring some with fresh basil, ginger and sugar substitute for a refreshing sauce for grilled fruit. One note: If regular fat-free yogurt is too "runny" for you, try plain nonfat Greek-style yogurt instead which is creamier and has a thicker consistency.
Try keeping this creamy Mexican dip as a snack to go with your cut up veggies! Full of flavor and delicious.

5) Swap regular dressings for low-fat or fat-free versions. Slash fat and calories.
TIP: Make your own dressings; they're often tastier and cheaper than store-bought.
This Greek Vinaigrette Dressing is one of my favorites and can be used as a marinade for grilled chicken or drizzled over cooked fish.
