Local Volunteers Canvass for Votes Leading up to Election Day

Paige Heinrich and her friend Gus may not be old enough to vote in Tuesday's election, but that doesn't mean these Wausau East high schoolers can't encourage others to do so.

"And just see where they are with who they're going to be voting for and telling them where their polling location is and giving them information they need if they're not registered," said Heinrich, 17, as she walks from house to house in Kronenwetter.

She and other Obama volunteers are out Sunday afternoon, knocking on what they call, targeted homes. Those are people who usually vote democratic, but don't always head to the polls.

"For three months I've been doing that a couple hours every night, making phone calls, entering data, talking to people, organizing everything, making posters," Heinrich said.

Meanwhile, Republicans are busy doing the same. Their volunteers are also getting out the vote Sunday evening, speaking with registered voters who lean conservative.

John Gentzel, the spokesman for the Duffy campaign, says phone banking and talking to people in person is the party's number one priority leading up to the election.

"It's critical that everyone gets out to vote Tuesday," Gentzel said.
