Families throughout Wood County came together to feed the public discourse on a topic near to their hearts.

They are celebrating World Breastfeeding Week with their first ever public "Latch On" event in Wisconsin Rapids and Marshfield.

About a dozen mothers participated by feeding their children together at Lyon Park in Wisconsin Rapids.

Leah Meidl, a nurse from the Wood County Breastfeeding Coalition, says their goal is to raise awareness about the many health advantages to breastfeeding, but also to make sure mom and baby are comfortable.

"Whether that means they are breastfeeding in a public park or that means they want to be more private, we are fine with that. We don't want anyone to look down on anybody because they are breast feeding," says Meidl.

While the event today was focused on awareness, the coalition also raises funds to provide resources and education to moms.

The group has a run walk and a golf outing planned for September.
