Local students have turned the shuttering of the Domtar paper mill in Port Edwards into a learning opportunity. 4th graders in Ann Pickett's class at Port Edwards Elementary School interviewed former employees of the mill for their book "Port Edwards Voices: The Rise and Fall of the Port Edwards Mill."
They have sold 300 copies of the book at $10 each to date. Profits will help buy electronic equipment to be used in the school.
"They understand their community and the history and the impact it has had," says Pickett. "They can walk down the street now and call people out by name."
On Monday, September 30th, two of the young writers as well as Pickett will speak to the Wisconsin Rapids Rotary Club at 12:30 p.m. For more information on how to purchase a copy of the book, you can call the Port Edwards School District at (715) 887 - 9000.
