Every week this February, NewsChannel 7 is featuring "Little Heroes" who make a difference in our community.
This week, we're featuring the story of Maria Jaunch.
Instead of asking for toys and stuffed animals for her 7th birthday, Maria asked people to give her things like catnip, rawhide and other pet supplies. She donated them all to the Humane Society of Marathon County.
"I thought maybe if I gave them all these toys they wouldn't be bored and they'd be occupied with toys," says Maria.
The Humane Society was more than happy to accept her generous donation.
"If our animals are going to have toys to play with it's coming out of the generosity of our donors," says Mary Kirlin of the Humane Society of Marathon County.
Community members also took notice. The South Area Business Association was amazed by her generosity. They gave her a "Citizen of the Year" Award in January.
Maria's mother is very proud of her daughter. She hopes that Maria's giving nature will only continue as she grows up.
"I could definitely see her wanting to do it again, in fact she's already collected some money to do it a second time," says Vicki Jaunch.
