Kansas Man Starts Van for Wife in Labor, Van Stolen and Destroyed

A high speed chase in Wichita, Kansas ends badly for not only the suspect, but also for the family that owned the vehicle.

According to KWCH-TV, around 2:30 a.m. a woman thought she was going into labor, so her husband went to start their van. However, when they went to leave their van was missing.

Deputies were able to track down the van and suspect, that's when a chase ensued. Officers threw out spike strips, shredding the van's two front tires - but the driver kept going. Once the rims started coming off and the van wouldn't go any further, the man was stopped and arrested.

An ambulance took the woman to the hospital, but it turned out to be a false alarm.

KWCH reports the family doesn't have insurance and it was their only form of transportation.

It is not illegal to leave a vehicle running while unattended in Wichita.
