Despite having K-9 officers on the job for just a little over a month, the Marathon County Sheriff's Department says they are already making a big impact.
The impact could be felt when a K-9 officer was dispatched to check out a suspicious package last week which turned out to be marijuana. That discovery prompted a search of homes in Wausau and Athens which led to the seizure of nearly $2 million worth of marijuana.
The department is grateful for their own K-9 units because it speeds up how quickly they can respond to calls. Prior to this year, they had to rely on other departments for help. If it wasn't for their K-9, they may have missed this drug bust.
"This could have absolutely been a situation where this incident went undiscovered and would have been done for another day." says Lt. Bill Millhausen.
The cost of purchasing the K-9's as well as their training was paid for through donations.
