J.C. Penney will soon leave Wausau, marking the end of a more than 30-year presence in the downtown.
The news came in January, as the company announced it would close 33 underperforming stores, including the Wausau location. Company-wide 2,000 employees would be let go.
J.C. Penney has been an anchor store in the Wausau Center Mall since the mall opened in August 1983. It had already been in downtown Wausau prior to the mall's opening at two different locations since 1917.
J.C. Penney will close Saturday, May 3. An employee tells us they may not stay open the entire day. The salon located in the mall will also stay open until May 3.
There's no word yet what, if anything, will move into the store's location.
