Lose Weight. It tops the list when it comes to making New Year's resolutions.

If you have more than just a few pounds to lose, you may have thought about weight loss surgery. Monday, on Sunrise 7, Dr. Steve Weiland, a Bariatric Surgeon from Asprius Hospital stopped by to explain who may be a good candidate for the procedure.

What does Bariatric means?
Baricatic surgery involves multiple surgeries; the Lap-band, Sleeve Gastrectomy, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. All operations to help you lose weight over the course of one to three years.

Not just anyone is candidate. How much weight does a person need to have to lose?
Typically, we have patients that weight 100 lbs. Over their ideal weight.

These procedures are for people who've tried to lose weight on their own, but just can't do it?
Absolutely. This is not an operation where it should be your first choice to lose weight. This should typically be for people who have tried over years to lose weight with diet and exercise.

We are certainly aware of the pros for these surgeries, are there any cons?
With out question. Every operation has complications associated with it, and some are catastrophic. So typically, we encourage patients to lose weight on their own, if they are not able to, we think the benefits of surgery outweigh the risks.

What are those benefits, as it's up to the patient to keep the weight off once it's lost?
I have had many patients who have struggled years out from surgery. They go back to bad eating habits and lack of exercise. So with out question, lifestyle changes are critical to long-term success.

Any tips for people who may not be right for surgery, but still struggle with weight loss?
The key is eating healthy, and exercising- which will help your overall global health.

How intense are these weight loss surgeries?
These operations are 1 ½ to 2 hours. Typically patients say in the hospital one to two nights. And you're back to work within a couple weeks.

How quickly does the weight come off?
Fairly quickly within the first three to six months. But usually it's a 12 to 18 month process before you lose all of your weight.
