MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. (AP) -- A massive pileup on Interstate 94 in northwestern Indiana caused motorists to be stuck for hours.

Three people died and more than 20 were injured in Thursday's accident near Michigan City, about 60 miles east of Chicago.

Indiana State Police said snow and whiteout conditions contributed to the pileup. The National Weather Service said lake-effect snow brought 1 to 2 inches per hour at the time of the afternoon wreck and reduced visibility to a quarter-mile or less.

Authorities closed the eastbound lanes overnight to clear the scene. I-94 is a main thoroughfare between Chicago and Detroit.

One woman who got caught in the backup didn't have food in the car for her three sons. A fellow traveler offered the family fruit, cereal and popcorn.
