Identifying the Risks Key in Preventing Allergic Reactions to Food

It’s snack time in Mrs. Splinter’s 4th grade class at Mosinee Middle School, and her students are enjoying their favorite mid-day treats. It supposed to be a fun time of the school day, but for students like Sierra Strom who battle food allergies, it’s a time of the day where she always has to be aware of her surroundings.

It’s something Sierra learned first-hand during a recent field trip when a friend gave her a cookie that ended up containing peanuts. She had a reaction and had to be rushed to the ER.

"I took a bite of it and it didn't taste right to me, so I ran up to my teacher and I told her and she said she'd call the nurse." Strom says.

Luckily Sierra was alright, but it served as a wake-up call to her and other allergic kids in her school to always use extra caution.

While it is often easy for children to identify what products they are allergic to, knowing what foods contain those products is often a challenge. That is why if your child has a food allergy, Dr. Todd Hostetler of ENT Associates of Wausau recommends getting your kids as familiar as possible with their allergens.

"I recommend people walk through the grocery store and walk through the baking aisle and show there are nuts in various forms there.” Dr. Hostetler says.

Making kids more aware of what foods pose the most risks is the first step towards preventing allergic reactions.
