Hunting Wolves a Possibility in Wisconsin

Wisconsin hunters may soon be able to set their sights on gray wolves.

The wolves have been taken off the Federal Endangered Species List and the population in Wisconsin is growing.

Now, a local state lawmaker is introducing a "Wolf Management Act" bill in the legislature.

Rep. Scott Suder (R-Abbotsford) would like the state to issue hunting permits for wolves.

"It's not going to be an all out hunting season and free-for-all. It will be much like bear hunting with permits issued. We need to bring the population down to the 350 level," said Suder.

He estimates there are between 1,000 and 2,500 gray wolves in Wisconsin. He says more than 30 attacks on livestock and pets have been reported over the past few years.

People in favor of protecting wolves are expected to oppose the bill.

Look and see where game management funding comes from, ever hear of the Pittman-Robertson Act, which taxes hunters on the equipement that we buy! How much does non-hunters do for the animals? Hunter Organizations are pro active in reinducing animals to the lands they once roamed. Hunters should put better message forth about the goals of hunting as a management tool and also a great way of keeping costs of food down. I hunt, I eat the game animals, and I will always enjoy it. If you want to talk about poor defenseless animals maybe look around and see how cows feel.

What are the true costs for tax payers? Please explain, think about how much revenue the state brings in for hunting. And if a child sees a dead animal it should be explained to them why we have hunting seasons and if you are a hunter or non hunter let the children decide for themselves what they choose to be, hunting has been around for generations.

Anon that would be hard to do. There are trucks in front of every gas station and tavern. Maybe you could cover the kill. No need to let small kids see dead animals. But then, I hope some day non hunters who out rank hunters in numbers say enough is enough. Therefore you may have to pay to hunt. Not just a a tiny amount for a license. Which the license does not cover the expense associated with any part of hunting. In this day and age hunters should support their habit. TIME FOR PEOPLE AGAINST HUNTING TO PROTEST PAYING TAXES FOR HUNTING!

Time for hunters to portray a better image in public. No wonder some people feel offended. You talk about your kills no mater who is around. No matter where you are in public. You park in front of a business with your kill on the hood or trunk or in the pickup box uncovered. You sit in the taverns for hours with the kill right outside. This could be a lot of you problem when it is seen by people who do not hunt.

Typical hunters reply! You have the right to hunt, this could change in time. Also you don't if land owners do not want you on their land. There are many non hunters owning land? Why should tax payers purchase DNR land to allow you to hunt? Second no comment about you paying all costs involved. Don't come back and even try to justify your license covers it. The license will never cover all costs. It is time for hunters to clean up their act. Maybe try to cover the animals in the back of your pickup. Maybe go home and wash the kill off your clothes before stepping into a bar. Non hunters have rights too, that is to not see a blood thirsty hunter. Think of this, before bragging how many shots it took to kill an animal, look around you. How does it make you sound, should you even be allowed to handle a rifle?

Are you kidding me! You people that are against hunting that is your choice and it is my choice to hunt. Have you considered what will happen if no one hunts these animals, the popultion will get so out of hand and the food source will not be there for all these animals. And what do you think will happen then, exactly there will be more attacks on humans, pets, and livestock, wheres the humanity in that. Hunting has been around for years, apparently all of you against hunting are vegetarians you would also be against slaughtering cows, pigs, chickens etc. Or do you think that meat just comes from the supermarket. Oh and by the way hunting doesnt make me feel like a man, because Im a woman and I hunt to put meat on my table.

Something to think about...If there are no hunters to control the populations, are you okay with hitting several more animals with your car and having them suffer/die from injuries? Do you want to see sick animals slowly waste away due to rampant diseases that are spread when the populations get too high? (these diseases can spread to domestic livestock & people) What about the starving animals that will move into towns and destroy your gardens, dig into your garbage, and attack your pets because there is not enough food to support them? How about the price of your food increasing because of the crop damage the animals create? Think about all the people who have jobs because of the millions of dollars hunters spend on gas, food, lodging, and equipment. Do you want to put more people out of work? Read the facts: http://dnr.wi.gov/topic/WildlifeHabitat/documents/Deerbook.pdf Hunting is an integral part of this state and helps maintain the balance between humans and wildlife. I am a proud bow/gun hunter of deer and small game who would like to say, "Your welcome."

I am glad some one stands up for animal rights. The animals have no voice in govt., they can not shoot back and they can not protect themselves. I also agree that hunters must feel like a man when killing a poor animal. I agree it is time to put an end to the hunters and the slaying of poor animals. I also agree it is time for people who do not hunt to stand up for animal rights. There are way more of us than hunters. What do you non hunters think? Is it time for the majority to contact our law makers?
  • by Another non hunter on Feb 5, 2012 at 11:08 AM
Amem brother! Stop the unless killing of animals. To bad all non hunters do not step forward and be counted! Hunting is out dated. It is not a sport it is out right killing! Time to do away with it.
