Hopefully you've already started thawing your bird. The average 10 to 18 pound turkey takes 3 to 4 days to thaw out in the refrigerator.
Now once you start cooking, how do you know when it's done? Experts suggest the breast needs to register 165°F and the thigh, 175°F. If the turkey is stuffed, the stuffing needs to reach 165°F as well. But be careful that the thermometer is not touching a bone.
Another way to tell if the turkey is ready is to pierce the thigh deeply with a fork. If the juice runs clear and not pink the turkey is ready to eat.
