From the outside the abandoned sawmill in Merrill doesn't look that scary. But dare to go in and you may just encounter Skullface.
The story of the Haunted Sawmill is a terrifying one. The building is said to be haunted by a disgruntled former employee of the Merrill Sawmill, Vincent Mudgett. Every year around Halloween, Vincent returns to the Sawmill as the ghoul Skullface. As Skullface, he has sworn to seek revenge on those who made him suffer during his life. Unfortunately for visitors, they sometimes get in the way of Skullface's revenge.
But before you get too scared, behind all the costumes and make-up are members of the Boy Scout Troop 599. Even though they enjoy scaring the wits out of visitors, for them it's less about the scare and more about helping the community. The Haunted Sawmill is an annual fundraiser for their troop. The money they raise allows them to continue promoting their service projects in the community and helps the boys pay for the costs of scouting.
If you decide to take the risk and tour The Haunted Sawmill, you can assist the Boy Scouts in their mission and save a dollar on the ticket price by brining a non-perishable food donation or a donation for the Lincoln County Humane Society. Last year the troop was able to present over 2,000 pounds of food to the food pantry in Merrill.
