Beginning Wednesday, the process of refilling McDill Pond in the Village of Whiting is expected to begin.

In an news release, Krista Olson the Secretary Commissioner McDill Lake District says the pond will be refilled at six inches per day and is expected to last 20 days.

The pond was drained to relieve pressure on the dam after a leak was discovered. The dam repair was completed in November 2012, and approval was received by the DNR to start refill on May 1st.

The DNR is also working on reopening the fishery, which is expected to re-open in mid-May.

During an interview with NewsChannel 7 in January 2012, Stevens Point Mayor Andrew Halverson says that with the refilling of the pond, property values around the dam will increase. He also says the recreational activities the pond offers, like fishing, also benefit the community. The pond is planned to be refilled this summer.

Highway HH in Portage County is now open after closing in June. The DOT closed the road over safety concerns when a leak was discovered on McDill pond dam.

The county highway commissioner reopened the four lane highway for drivers Thursday morning after a report showed it was safe for traffic.

The Village of Whiting is working to repair the dam, but the project needs funding. During an interview with NewsChannel 7 in August, Patti Dreier, the Portage County Executive said coming to an agreement for who would pay for the inspection took some time because the dam belongs to the Village of Whiting, the road belongs to the county and most people living around the pond live in Stevens Point.

To relieve pressure on the dam McDill Pond was drained.
